Hello ladies and gents...

Forgive me indulging in something of a long shot! I'm from Manchester, England, and I'm coming to Chicago as part of my vacation. I'll be in town from Tuesday through to Saturday.

I was due to travel with a friend and as such I bought two tickets to the Blackhawks-Maple Leafs game on Friday night. As it is, for long and complicated reasons, I'll be travelling on my own. I've only ever seen one NHL game previous to this trip and I'll still be going even if it's just me and I sit next to an empty seat. However, that seems a bit of a waste.

So my question is, is there a local fan who'd like to take my spare ticket and come along too? I'd appreciate the extra experience of watching the game with a local who can probably teach me a few things, and er...well, you get to have me buy you a beer between periods. And you get to laugh at my stunning ineptitude when it comes to the game of ice hockey.

All I ask is face value ($95) for the ticket, which is in block 208 of United Center.

Leave comments or you can email me: ben dot rushworth at gmail dot com.

Thanks!

ruining the phoenix's plans

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Some great ska bands are playing the Metro, and I've got a pair of tickets. Unfortunately, things have come up, and I won't be able to go.

I'm looking for face value, $15 a piece.

The bands on the bill are as follows:

Mustard Plug
The Toasters
Voodoo Glow Skulls
and more! (maybe only one more, I can't access the Metro's site for some reason)

PLease, if you're looking for something to do on Saturday, please let me know.

Thanks!

Does anyone know of any CSAs that are still taking subscriptions this late in the season? I knew of one, but it's full.

Has anyone else encountered grocery/liquor stores that wouldn't sell them alcohol because their drivers license said "Under 21 Until" on it?

I'm several years over 21 but still have a license with the "under..." on it so am running into this situation. And yes I'm going to get a new license, but I'm an out of state student so until winter break when I can go to my parents' I'm stuck with what I've got and taking my passport with me to the grocery store to get wine for dinner.

I know Sam's Liquor in Wicker Park has this rule and Jewel Osco is going to start implementing it November 1st. Is there anywhere else? Is there a reason behind these decisions? I've googled and found nothing.

Tenants in both other units are musicians. They are respectful but you can expect occasional noise. Employed artists or artist-minded people encouraged to apply. References will be checked.

This apartment would be perfect for a couple of college students or artists looking to save a few bucks and still have a really nice place. :)

I bought this rug from overstock.com and it arrived yesterday:

http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Bimini-Indoor-Outdoor-Terracotta-Rug-710-x-11/3898865/product.html

Paprika-orange and beige damask design, poly fabric. It is HUGE... 7'11"x11'. Not kidding, this will fill your whole living room or porch.

It is way too big for my room, and I already accepted it and opened the packaging, so I can't return it. I'd just like to make back most of what I paid for it - I'm asking $170. If you can get it tomorrow evening (Friday) between 6pm-7pm, I'll sell it to you for $150.

You must pick up; I live in a third-floor walkup and it's not light. Judge yourself whether you need two people, I couldn't take it UP the stairs myself. I'll help you roll it but I can't help you get it down the stairs.

Send me an email at juniperesque@livejournal.com to hash out details.

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.

Anyone have an idea how I could find an older photo of Lane Tech's football stadium available online? I know it was built in the '30s; really, anything from before the '70s would be ideal. My Googling must be craptacular because I'm not turning much up at all. Lots of photos of the school, but nothing of the stadium in full. Any thoughts would be much appreciated, because clearly I am dumb.

It occurs to me now I should call the school...but any other ideas?

My husband and I (okay, maybe just I) have decided to just go ahead and be "that couple" this year and send out Christmas cards complete with a photo of us with our two dogs and cat. Last year at Christmas we had only been married a month, had just one dog, and pretty much no money.

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for a photographer. Or, if you're up to the task, that works too! Thing is, I don't think we could go any higher than $100... however, we're only looking for one simple, presentable shot of us with our pets. I'm finding "holiday card sessions" for $295 when I search, and that's absolutely not doable. If I could pay someone $20 to point a camera at us and take a picture, I would, but this is where our embarrassing lack of friends is extremely evident. We'd gladly go somewhere to have it done since our living room, even if we put up the tree, isn't the greatest place for a keepsake like this.

I found an event from last year that offered exactly what I want for $85, for charity, through Red Dog House I believe it was called... unfortunately, their site mentions nothing about one for this year (or anything since January for that matter).

I would like to pay a small amount like that to just get a picture that looks "nice enough"... it just looks like I'll either have to do without, or win the lottery to pay for an hour long sitting with 50 shots :( We're in Edgewater, but distance really isn't much of an issue for us, unlike cost.

(for the record, no, we will not be writing a Christmas letter from the cat's perspective)
